Mosley, Thaddeus (Thad) (American/Western PA, b. 1926), Triangular Abstraction Sculpture, undated, early 1990s, wood and nails, incised monograms on the underside, 13.75 x 19 x 19 inches. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, c.1995. Steve says: Thad Mosley was born in 1926 of a family of miners and farmers. He served in the Navy and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1950. He then worked for the Postal Service and wrote for the Pittsburgh Courier. Thad made beautiful wood sculptures and had his first solo exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Art in 1968. He has said, ‘For me, sculpture is the joy and essence of my life.' Mendelson Gallery has shown Thad’s’ work many times. Somehow people thought the prices were too high for a humble, gracious black man from Pittsburgh. As a result, we sold very little, other than a few small works that I bought. Never doubting himself for an instant, after being shown in the Carnegie International, Thad now shows around the world and is represented by Karma Gallery. The work sells for 10 to 15 times the prices we asked not so very long ago. Bravo, Thad.
