Crane, Stephen, et al., The Lanthorn Book: Being a Small Collection of Tales and Verses read at The Sign o' The Lanthorn, 1898, number 98 of 125 copies, signed by 5 of the contributors including Stephen Crane at the end of their entries, hardcover, original leather-backed boards, title label, 11.25 x 8.5 inches. Crane, the author of The Red Badge of Courage, died two years after this book was published and his signature has remained scarce and desirable. This copy is also signed by John Langdon Heaton, Irving Bacheller, Post Wheeler, Charles B. Lewis (as M. Quad) and Charles Kelsey Gaines. Provenance: Estelle Doheny, a book collector who once owned a Gutenberg Bible, with her leather ex libris plate affixed to the front pastedown. Housed in a newer green linen slipcase.
Condition
In good condition, top edges uncut, shallow losses to the leather spine ends, neat repair to front outer hinge and possibly other small repairs to the binding throughout, lower corners dinged, unmarked text, margins with occasional light finger soil.
