Evans, Walker (American, 1903-1975), Emile Aubrun (Gladiolus), silver gelatin print, image taken 1929-1930, titled in pencil on verso likely in Evans' hand, 8 x 5.5 inches, framed 13 x 10 inches, from Evans' Gladiolus series which was shot on his father's property in Darien, CT. This is one of Evans' earliest known photographs taken after returning from Paris. This type of Gladiola was named after the famous French aviation pioneer. See Mellow's biography, 96-97. Provenance: From the estate of Henry Haines Hower Jr. A group of 17 Gladiolus photos appeared at Swann in 2007. This image is from the same collection as those -- apparently the original consignor had 18 photos and kept this one for themself. Comes with copies of emailed correspondence from 2003 between the Swann lot's consignor and John T. Hill, executor of Evans' estate, where he says of the whole group "The flower portraits look like Evans to me as does the writing on the back. I have seen negatives from this series but never his own prints and I believe these are likely his prints."
