Philipp, Werner (German/American, 1897-1982), Abstracted Man, 1960, ink on paper, signed and dated lower right, sheet size 20 x 13.5 inches, in a metal frame 27 x 22 inches. Born in Breslau, Germany, Philipp studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, with Oskar Kokoschka in Dresden, and Yves Brayer in Paris. A Jew, he fled Nazi Germany in the late 1930s and settled in San Francisco. Provenance: The personal collection of Edward J. Grzybowski. Ed was co-owner of Tri-State Antiques in Canonsburg. He was well known and respected in the field for his vast knowledge of antiques and decorative arts, particularly 20th century design. In seemingly good condition, unexamined outside of the frame.
