Philipp, Werner (German/American, 1897-1982), Abstracted Man, 1960, ink on paper, signed and dated lower right, sheet size 20 x 13.5 inches, in a metal frame 27 x 22 inches. Born in Breslau, Germany, Philipp studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, with Oskar Kokoschka in Dresden, and Yves Brayer in Paris. A Jew, he fled Nazi Germany in the late 1930s and settled in San Francisco. Provenance: The personal collection of Edward J. Grzybowski. Ed was co-owner of Tri-State Antiques in Canonsburg. He was well known and respected in the field for his vast knowledge of antiques and decorative arts, particularly 20th century design.
Condition
