Wooden Dogon Dyodyomini (hornbill) mask, Mali, West Africa, 19th/20th century. Of boxlike form surmounted by an extended bill, used in the dama ceremonies of the Dogon people of Mali. A similar example is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection. 14.5 x 5.5 x 25, 18 inches height on stand. Provenance: from the estate of Leon and Jane Arkus. Leon was the Director of the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, from 1969 to 1980.

Condition

Cracked and repaired at the tip of the bill, faded and flaked paint, one element at the crest of the head is broken off and worn down.
