Taylor, attributed to Tom (British dramatist and art critic, 1817-1880), A Fluffle of Rabbits Playing Blind Man's Bluff, c.1870s, oil on canvas, relined, illegibly signed in red to lower left corner, 24 x 42 inches, in a period gilt wood frame 35 x 53 inches. Provenance: William Henry Fosdick (1842-1883) to Mary Virginia Fosdick Riggs to Robert M. Riggs; private owner. Old label on the back of the frame credits the artist as Taylor, and says that it was in the Riggs-Whitlock collection of the Louisville Public Library in 1937. A whimsical scene, showing a group of rabbits blindfolding a member of their warren. Taylor was an English dramatist, critic, biographer, public servant, and editor of Punch magazine. Little information is available on his artistic career, but his wife, Laua Wilson Barker, and son, John Wycliffe Taylor, were both well known painters. Relined and with a heavy layer of varnish; possible old repairs along the extreme edges; repairs to the frame.
