Mayer, William G. (American/Pittsburgh, 1886-1962), The Close of Day - Pittsburgh Nocturne, 1914 (or earlier), oil on canvas, signed Wm. G. Mayer at lower left, 41 x 47 inches, in a wood frame 54.5 x 61 inches. Exhibited in the 1914 Associated Artists of Pittsburgh show at the Carnegie Institute, with the partially legible label affixed to the back of the frame. Provenance: Descent through the Mayer Family; Eugene Brunozzi Jr., Pittsburgh; Concept Gallery auction, November 2011. Exhibited: An Exhibition of Paintings by Wm. G. Mayer: A Pittsburgh Painter, 1986, University Art Gallery, Frick Fine Arts Building. Mayer was influenced by Edward Gorson and Edward Willis. A native of Pittsburgh, he studied with Gorson and showed in the AAP shows between 1913-1918. He married in 1917 and was active in the family business. There's little evidence that he made any paintings after 1918.
In generally good condition apart from uneven varnish layer, old repair in the lower right area, planar distortion, possibly relined, puncture at lower left corner.
