Monticelli, Adolphe Joseph Thomas (French, 1824-1886), Les Orientales, oil on canvas, since laid down on board, signed lower right, oval shape, 32 x 25.75 inches, in a gilt wood frame 37 x 31 inches. Provenance: from the collection of Aaron Sheon, Pittsburgh, the author of the 1978 exhibition catalog Monticelli: His Contemporaries, His Influence, published by the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh. This painting is illustrated on page 166 of that book (plate 12). The show traveled around North America and Europe, and this painting was exhibited as part of that show in Pittsburgh as well as Toronto, Art Gallery of Ontario, 27 January-11 March 1979; Washington, Corcoran Gallery of Art, 21 April-27 May 1979; and Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh, 28 June-2 September 1979.
Condition
In good condition, the canvas has been laid down on board and is bubbling along the lower edge and at center left on the blue skirt, surface is somewhat flattened due to the lining process and under a soiled varnish, no apparent inpainting visible under blacklight.
