East, Alfred (British, 1849-1913), Construction of Forbes Field, Pittsburgh, PA, 1909, watercolor on paper, signed and inscribed by the artist in pencil in the lower left (To my friend A. Hamerschlag from Alf East), 9.5 x 13.25 inches, matted and framed 17 x 21 inches. Provenance: Arthur A. Hamerschlag, a mechanical engineer who served as the first President of Carnegie Mellon University (then the Carnegie Institute of Technology) in Pittsburgh. Attached to the back of the frame is an old handwritten note from Arthur's wife, Elizabeth Ann Hamerschlag, that reads: Perhaps the Art Dept. of the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh might like this picture, It is a water color study by Sir Alfred East of Forbes Baseball Field in the process of construction, And a gift to my husband Arthur A. Hamerschlag. According to a letter from John W. Beatty, director of the Carnegie Institute of Art, to Andrew Carnegie, Alfred East was in Pittsburgh from April 5th to early May in 1909 to serve as an international juror for the Carnegie International. Construction on Forbes Field started on March 1, 1909 and ended on June 30th, placing East in Oakland right around the midway point of the stadium's construction. A rare Pittsburgh image, with outstanding provenance. Sheet has been mounted to a backing board; otherwise in good condition, with old water stains visible at the lower edge, and a few other areas of light staining, soil and scratches. Merchandise will be packed and transported by the purchaser at their own risk and expense. A list of recommended shippers is on our website: https://www.conceptgallery.com/auctions/shipping/ .
