Warhol, Andy (American, 1928-1987), 4 Original Blotted Line Drawings for an Ad Campaign, showing a male and female with numbers in their heads, 1952 or 1953, ink on heavy wove paper, one with Andy Warhol written on the verso in pencil by an unknown hand, otherwise unsigned, pencil annotations (closed eyes, No) in an unknown hand, sheet sizes all right around 4-4.5 x 4-4.5 inches, unframed. Provenance: from the estate of Robert (Bob) Hagenhofer (1923-2007), a graphic designer and environmental activist who worked with Warhol in the Will Burton design studio from 1952-1953. Born in Chicago, he served in WW II and then graduated from the Chicago Institute of Design. He then moved to Staten Island in 1952 where he continued his graphic design work and later became active as an environmentalist in response to Robert Moses' attempt to build a highway through the Staten Island Greenbelt. According to the Warhol Museum website: Warhol first experimented with blotted line while still a college student at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). He continued to craft this technique in his commercial work in New York City throughout the 1950s. Blotted line enabled Warhol to create a variety of illustrations along a similar theme. This type of production allowed him to bring multiple ideas to clients to increase the odds that one of his drawings would be chosen for the final advertisement. Warhol began by copying a line drawing in pencil on a piece of non-absorbent paper, such as tracing paper. Next, he hinged this piece of paper to a second sheet of more absorbent paper by taping their edges together on one side. With a fountain pen, Warhol inked over a small section of the drawn lines. He then transferred the ink onto the second sheet by folding along the hinge and lightly pressing or blotting the two papers together. The process resulted in the dotted, broken, and delicate lines that are characteristic of Warhol’s illustrations. In good condition.
