Edward King, Antiguedades de Mexico basadas en la recopilacion de Lord Kingsborough, Volumes 1 and 2, 1964, First Edition in Spanish, published by Secretaria de Hacienda y Credito Publico in Mexico City, hardcovers, large 4to., in red slipcase, both volumes illustrated throughout with color plates. The English language edition, Antiquities of Mexico, was first published in 1831 and was so expensive to produce that it landed King in a debtors' prison. King's initial goal was to prove that the indigenous peoples of the Americas were a Lost Tribe of Israel. Rare on the market. Provenance: from the collection of Cardinal Luigi Raimondi (1912-1975), an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as prefect of the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints from his elevation to the cardinalate by Pope Paul VI in 1973 until his death two years later. Raimondi also served as the Apostolic Delegate to the United States from 1967 until his appointment to the Vatican post in Rome.
