Matthews, Ben (American/Pittsburgh, contemporary), The Land Without Laughter, triptych, 2003, oil on wood panels, signed on the back, opens to 24 x 32 inches, with a haunting depiction of the Cathedral of Learning on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in the center. Steve says: Ben Matthews’ artwork caught my eye in New York at O.K. Harris gallery before I ever met him. We have shown his tongue in cheek circus paintings several times, once even accompanied by a sword swallower, a belly dancer, a fire breather and Phat Man Dee who sang with her fist down her throat! Ben left his New York career and concentrated on Pittsburgh where he still paints, plays guitar and has a home in Munhall. His subjects range from The Piano Player with Four Arms, Dog Devouring Fleas, Gods Mouth in a Jar and the Sex Idol with Five Penises. Ben also explores Gothic Imagery and paints atmospheric
Pittsburgh scenes.
