Schulz, Bruno, edited by Mieczyslaw Grydzewski, Wiadomosci Literackie, Nr. 18 (650), Niedziela 26 Kwietnia 1936, Rok XII (April 26), literary newspaper published in Warsaw, text in Polish, 8 pages, folded once vertically and once horizontally. The highlight of this issue is a lengthy book review by the mid-War Modernist author and artist Bruno Schulz of a novel by the French writer Maurice Constantin-Weyer. Schulz was a regular book reviewer for this journal, and he also published many of his most famous stories from Cinnamon Shops and Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass in its pages. Other contributors to this issue include Zofia Nalkowska, Emil Breiter, Zdzislaw Czermanski, Henryk Gotlib, Antoni Slonimski, Stefania Zahorska. Original issues of this journal are quite rare, considering that they had to survive World War 2 in Poland. Especially scarce are any issues with contributions by Schulz or Witold Gombrowicz. According to YIVO, Wiadomo?ci Literackie’s situation was shaped by its widespread perception as a Jewish periodical. This was reflected in its popular nickname Jado-moski literackie (Here come the literary Moskis; i.e., Jews) and substantiated by the prominent role of Polonized Jews among its editors, regular contributors, and readers.
Condition
In good condition, light tearing along the edges; small punctures along spine and where the folds meet; paper toned just very lightly. Overall, quite impressive considering the time and place it was published. Merchandise will be packed and transported by the purchaser at their own risk and expense.
