Lindbergh, Charles, To Bogota and Back By Air, 1928, manuscript and typescript with annotations for an article published in the May 1928 issue of National Geographic, presented to and from the personal collection of the magazine's editor, Gilbert Grosvenor. Hardcover, 12.75 x 10 inches, beautiful full copper leather binding, gilt stamped, raised bands, silk endpapers, housed in custom slipcase. Includes: printed title page presenting the manuscript to Grosvenor, 10 handwritten pages in black ink on sheets of paper 10 x 6.5 inches, 37 typed pages (11 x 8.5 inches) each one with extensive handwritten annotations in black ink, and the finished article which appeared on pages 529-601 of the May 1928 issue (Vol. LIII, No.5) of The National Geographic Magazine. All of the sheets were glued along the edges of their verso to a support of heavy wove paper. Lindbergh has numbered the pages a, b, c, 1, 2, 3, 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a, 5a, 6a, 4-37, 38 - the lettered pages and page 38 are the manuscript sheets and the rest are the typescript. The sheets are in the order of the final version, and the manuscript pages were written after the typescript. Provenance: from the estate of a direct descendent of Gilbert Grosvenor, Western PA. Grosvenor was the first full-time employee of the National Geographic Society and Alexander Graham Bell's son-in-law. He was the editor of National Geographic Magazine from 1899-1954 and the President of the National Geographic Society from 1920-1954. The manuscript and typescript sheets are no longer glued to the supporting page but are safe and secure sitting loosely between the pages, old glue stains are visible along the edges of the sheet; otherwise in fine condition.
