Howland, S. S., Victoria Falls: The Great Falls of the Zambesi AND Ruins of the Great Zimbabwe, 1914, typescript with original photos and manuscript captions, hardcover, 3/4 leather binding, gilt title and author's initials to spine, teg, author's handwritten name and title to both title pages. The first article includes 32 pages of text, 32 photos and one fold-out map - the photos show various views of the falls and surrounding areas plus pictures of the natives and apparently one photo of the author taken from the back. The second article includes 24 pages of text, 23 photos and one fold out map - the photos primarily show different views of the Elliptical Temple, also known as the Great Enclosure, in southeast Zimbabwe; Howland and a woman of his similar age and dress appear in a few of the photos. A few manuscript corrections to the text in pencil. Howland, who signed his name with FRGS, was ostensibly a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Provenance: from the estate of a direct descendent of Gilbert Grosvenor, Western PA. Grosvenor was the first full-time employee of the National Geographic Society and Alexander Graham Bell's son-in-law. He later went on to become the editor of National Geographic Magazine from 1899-1954 and the President of the National Geographic Society from 1920-1954. It's likely that this was submitted to Grosvenor to be included in an issue of National Geographic. We couldn't find much on Howland online, although there is a record of him donating Abyssinia related material to the Early African Collections of the Smithsonian Institution in 1902.
