Corneille, Guillaume (Dutch, 1922-2010), Femme Nue Sous la Lune, 1990, serigraph printed in colors, 37.8 x 37.8 inches, pencil signed and numbered XIX/XXV, Published by GKM editions, framed measuring 43.5 x 43.5 inches. Corneille was one of the founders of the CoBrA group. The works of Paul Klee and Joan Miró had a strong influence on Corneille and, like them, he was inspired by African culture, which he got to know well during several trips to Africa. Initially, his art was non-figurative, but he gradually turned to painting fantastical landscapes in warm tones, frequently characterized by symbiotic representations of female figures and birds. The woman represents beauty and voluptuousness, while the bird symbolizes freedom and strength. Since his debut in Groningen more than half a century ago, Corneille has participated in hundreds of exhibitions in various galleries and is represented in museums around the world.
