Shepard, E. H. (Ernest Howard), Woman Proposes, mid 1930s, ink and white gouache on paper, signed lower left and titled in lower margin, 10.5 x 7.25 inches, matted and framed 19.5 x 14.5 inches. This is an original ink drawing by Shepard, made for page 100 of the book version of Laurence Housman's play, Victoria Regina, which was first published in 1934. The play was then produced in London and New York theatres from 1935-1937. On Broadway, it starred Helen Hayes as Queen Victoria and a young Vincent Price as Prince Albert. Provenance: originally owned by Helen Hayes and given as a gift to Victoria Price, the daughter of Vincent and his wife Mary, in honor of her birth in 1962. Vincent Price's handwritten provenance and scene description is in blue ink on a card mounted to the back of the frame. Additionally, it includes a letter from Victoria Price on Price-Dewey Galleries stationery confirming the authenticity and expanding upon the provenance. Shepard is best known for his drawings of the children book classics Winnie the Pooh and Wind in the Willows.
