Curtis, Edward S. (American, 1868-1952), Women of the Desert - Navaho, 1906, sepia tinted photogravure on thin tissue paper, image 11.5 x 15.25 inches, full sheet 13.25 x 16.75 inches, hinged at the corners to a backing sheet 17.5 x 21.75 inches, unframed. An original, striking image. Plate 27 from Portfolio I, Apache, Jicarillas and Navaho, of his famous series The North American Indian. Curtis wrote about this image: The Navaho women are, for the greater part, the owners of the flocks and invariably, with the children, the herders. They are so thoroughly at home on their scrubby ponies that they seem a part of them and probably excel all other Indians as horsewomen.
