Bellows, George Wesley (American, 1882-1925), Murder of Edith Cavell, 1918, lithograph, signed, titled and numbered 95 (from the edition of 99) in pencil to the lower edge, image size 18.5 x 24.25 inches, matted and framed 28.5 x 34.5 inches. In 1915 Edith Cavell, head of the Training School for Nurses in occupied Brussels, was arrested for assisting Allied Powers soldiers escape from the country. Two months later, she was shot by the German authorities. Other impressions of this print are in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum, National Gallery of Art and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
