Gottlieb, Harry (Romanian/American, 1895-1992), Repairs on the Railroad, 1938, oil on canvas, since relined, signed and dated lower right, 20 x 30 inches, framed 20.75 x 31 inches. Provenance: deaccessioned from a regional corporate collection; Ellen Sragow Gallery, NYC. From the Sragow website: Harry Gottlieb was an artist whose career flourished under the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal program aimed at providing employment for artists during the Great Depression. As part of the WPA's Federal Art Project, Gottlieb created numerous prints and murals that depicted scenes of everyday American life with a focus on social realism. His artwork often portrayed urban landscapes, industrial scenes, and portraits of ordinary people, reflecting both the challenges and resilience of the era.

Condition

In generally good condition. Restored in 1984 with the following: relined, cleaned, small areas of touch ups and inpainting, and a new layer of varnish.
