Kniedler, Jean (American/Pittsburgh/California, 1927-2008), Mt. Washington Hillside No. I, 1954, scratchboard drawing, signed (with her married name) and titled on the mat, image size 10.75 x 13.5 inches, matted and framed 17 x 21 inches. Exhibited: 44th Annual Exhibition of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh (1954), with original label on the backing board. A strikingly modern take of Mount Washington in Pittsburgh's South Side, including the famous incline. From her obituary: Jean was a classmate and friend of Andy Warhol while they went to college together at Carnegie Institutue of Technology. They are both in the famous photo of the Modern Dance club in the 1949 CIT yearbook (see the last image in this listing). In 1965, Jean suffered a major stoke leaving her right side disabled. This forced her to learn to draw and paint with her left hand while raising two young children. This is the first piece by Kniedler to ever come to auction.
The drawing has been mounted to a backing board; otherwise in good condition. Merchandise will be packed and transported by the purchaser at their own risk and expense. A list of recommended shippers is on our website: https://www.conceptgallery.com/auctions/shipping/ .
