Audubon, after John James; engraved, printed and colored by Robert Havell; Brown Titlark, from the double elephant folio edition of Birds of America, printed 1835, hand colored etching on wove paper with J Whatman Turkey Mill 1835 watermark, plate size 12.75 x 20.25 inches, full sheet 25.25 x 37.5 inches, matted and framed 29.5 x 41 inches. Printed No. 2 and Plate X in upper corners and description in lower center. A striking image showing a male and female eying up a small bug, while sitting atop a brown mound with mushrooms (conocybe and mycena). An authentic, original print from the earliest and most desirable of all of the Audubon editions. Provenance: purchased decades ago by the current consignor from a Christie's auction.
Condition
Image itself in good condition with clean and bold colors; light foxing to the upper register, and foxing and age-toning to the blank margins; old thread holes to upper margin from the original binding; hinged at 5 small areas on the top edge of the verso.
