Boksay, Josif/Jozef/Yosyp Josifovic (Ukrainian, 1891 - 1975), Cain and Abel, 1930s/1940s, oil on canvas laid on board, signed lower right. 27 x 34 inches, in a metallic wooden frame 32.25 x 39.25 inches. Boksay (Iosipovich Bokshai, Joseph Bokshai, Joseph Josephovich Bokshay) was an important 20th century Ukrainian painter. He studied in Budapest with the Hungarian artist Imre Revesv (1859-1945), and worked for the Russian National Council, helping to organize exhibitions. He was recognized nationally and internationally, earning the title of Honored Art Figure for the USSR in 1951 and the People's Artist of Ukraine in 1960.
