Baskin, Leonard, text by Ted Hughes, Mokomaki: Thirteen Etchings of Shrunken and Tatooed Maori Heads, 1985, number 6 of 10 copies (from a total run of 50) that includes an ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR of a Maori head (9 x 8 inches), a copper plate, and an extra suite of 14 etchings (13 illustrations plus title vignette) printed on different color papers, signed by Baskin on the colophon and each etching in the book is signed and numbered by Baskin, the watercolor and each etching in the extra suite are also signed by him, Eremite Press, hardcover, slim folio, full deep red goatskin leather binding by Gray Parrot, the extra suite in a vellum folder, all housed in clamshell slipcase. "The rich ethnological collections of the Brooklyn Museum had entranced me as a child when I paid them intense & long attendance. It was the works of the Northwest peoples & the Maori that trapped my sharpest notice. I was overwhelmed by the fierce power locked in the totemic forms & of the ornamented power preserved in the Maori carvings. When, one day, at an antiquarian bookfair, I bought a book by a doubtlessly mad English Major-General on the tattooed, severed, and mummified heads of Maori warriors, childish memories mingled with the book's extraordinary images & 'Mokomaki' ensued." GEHENNA PRESS 84. Provenance: deaccessioned from a regional institution; will include a letter of deaccession from the institution.
