Hetzel, Lila Barr (American/Western PA, 1873-1967), Sketchbook, first page dated October 23, 1893, but all dated drawings are from 1894-1896, signed on the first page by Hetzel, and a few individual drawings are signed or initialed as well, most have pencil annotations identifying the subject, 8.5 x 11 inches, total of 23 pages with drawings - 4 in ink, the rest in pencil, subjects include portraits of her mother, a self-portrait, landscapes, one titled Bank of Ohio River near Belleview. Provenance: gift from the artist to a close family friend. Lila Hetzel was born in Edgewood, Pittsburgh, and was the daughter of George Hetzel who founded the Scalp Level School. In good condition, finger soil, handling and light toning to the paper; the book itself is in poor condition, frayed, with cracked hinges; the pages are holding on to the binding by a single thread.
