Lot of items from the estate of American diplomat Ulysses Grant Smith, of Washington, PA, the who served as the minister to Albania and Uruguay between the wars, and, before that, in Copenhagen and Constantinople. Includes his personal copy of Correspondence and Documents Respecting the International Naval Conference, held in London, December 1908-February 1909 -- this is made up of an 106 page section in English and 393 pp. in French; Grant Smith represented the United States in this 10 country negotiation. Plus handwritten letters from fellow diplomats P. A. Jay, dated 1906 Constantinople, and Walter Townley, undated, Washington, DC. Also with a telegraph from Robert Bacon, who briefly served as Secretary of State in 1909. Also with a postcard to Smith from Florence, Italy. Also with a broadside authored by Smith and printed by the Pittsburgh Press Club in 1917 "clearing up some of the erroneous ideas about the war." Also with three copies of British Contraband of War, mimeographed, dated 1914. Finally, a large, 5 page program from the Therapia Polo Club in Constantinople for their Gymkhana Donne Sous le Haut Patronage de Sa Majeste Imperiale le Sultan, dated 1905 -- Grant Smith and Jay were members of this club and, apparently, accomplished riders. An impressive and varied collection, covering the work and leisure life of an early 20th century diplomat.
