Eddy, Mary Baker, Science and Health: With Key to the Scriptures, 1941, the famous Subscription Edition, hardcover, large, thick 4to., in full navy morocco, printed in black and red, limited to 1,026 copies, housed in original slipcase, published by the First Church of Christ, Scientist. The Subscription Edition had been announced to Christian Science churches, societies, and Reading Rooms in 1939 at the price of $100. In June 1941 the published book was delivered to the first subscribers. The book is printed on handmade paper, and as a part of Orcutt’s design a Cross and Crown emblem watermark was incorporated into the paper. An oft-reprinted book, the Subscription Edition was meant for display and preservation, rather than day to day use. Provenance: deaccessioned from a regional institution; will include a letter of deaccession from the institution. Library bookplate, with Withdrawn stamp, affixed to the front pastedown, otherwise a Near Fine copy showing only a hint of sunning to the spine; tight binding, clean and unmarked interior; the slipcase is rubbed, but secure and attractive.
