Vanka, Maxo (Maximilian) (Croatian/American/Pittsburgh, 1889-1963), Still Life With Lilacs, undated, but likely 1937, oil with heavy impasto on canvas board, signed lower right, 16.25 x 21.75 inches, in a period gilt wood carved frame 24.5 x 31 inches. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist by a member of St. Nicholas Croatian Church in Millvale while Vanka was there painting the murals in 1937 that would become his masterpiece; then by descent to the current consignor. From the church's website: Born Maximilian Vanka in 1889, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, later becoming a professor. Though he found success in Croatia, the growing threat to his Jewish family fueled his immigration to America in 1934. At the behest of Father Zagar, he arrived in Millvale in 1937 and again in 1941 to create the Vanka Murals at St. Nicholas Church.
