Ipeelee, Osuitok (Inuit/Nunavut /Canadian, 1923-2005), Mother and Child, c.1976, dolomite marble sculpture, signed in syllabics on the underside, 27 x 10 x 14 inches; comes with a wooden presentation stand. In 1952 the National Gallery of Canada presented the exhibition Eskimo Art, which included four of Ipeelee's works and the 1955 exhibition Eskimo Sculpture also held at the National Gallery of Canada featured six of his sculptures. He was commissioned in 1959 to carve a sculpture of Queen Elizabeth II to be given to the Queen herself upon her arrival in Canada and in 1970 commissioned by Public Works Canada to create an inukshuk at the External Affairs Headquarters in Ottawa, ON. His was elected as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1973 and received the Lifetime Aboriginal Art Achievement Award, now known as the Indspire Award, in 2004.
Condition
