Ludick, Paul (American, b.1957), Chairnoble, 1986, stacked and stained birch plywood stool, signed, titled, dated, and inscribed 5 of 10 on the underside. 20.25 x 16.5 inches. Ludick's statements on the piece: Chairnoble is stacked birch plywood with a grayish/green concrete stain and a black painted interior. This piece was a statement after the Soviet Union’s Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. The design of the stool is that of a western designed cooling tower. Nuclear power at the time was touted as the ultimate power source for electricity. My Chairnoble is a stool. When one sits on a stool with a hole in it, the body recognizes it as a toilet. This is my comment on the nuclear industry. My design, being in the form of a western-style cooling tower, shows concern that a Chernobyl could happen here. My societal statement pieces (like Chairnoble) were not just about a societal/conceptual statement but also included the physical interaction of the “sitter” sitting on an object and the communication that took place between two entities. This human interaction with an object came out of my experiences as a performance artist and sculptor. My intent was to expand a person’s intuitive experience beyond the traditional human senses-using different parts of the body to “touch” with, beyond just the fingers. Provenance: Ludick was part of the Art et Industrie movement, which began in the late 1970s. The movement challenged the concept of function vs. design in furniture making within the United States. Ludick exhibited at Art et Industrie, Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, and Magen H Gallery among others. His works are part of both private and public collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Francisco Museum of Art. Provenance: Acquired from the artist.
