Davis, Perry (American/Pittsburgh, 1923-1988), Untitled Abstract, 1951, oil on board, signed and dated at the bottom, 10 x 7.25 inches, unframed. Perry Davis taught painting, drawing, and the history of art at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) from 1946-1955, where one of his students was a young Andy Warhol. According to Blake Gopnik's biography of Warhol, Perry Davis heavily influenced Warhol's art, and, perhaps more importantly, helped to make the CIT art department one of the few spaces in Pittsburgh where queer students and professors could feel comfortable exploring their art. Davis showed in a number of Associated Artist of Pittsburgh shows during his time in the city before moving to the Southwest. He eventually settled in Columbus, Ohio and remained active in the arts.
