Young, Purvis (American, 1943-2010), Untitled Abstract, Ship on the Sea, undated, oil on found paper, signed at the upper right, 22 inches square, unframed. Provenance: Steve Mendelson collection. Purvis Young was an African-American artist of Bahamian descent. His art was often a blend of painting and drawing with collaged elements utilizing everyday found materials. Young was an autodidact and acquired a vast treasure trove of resources for inspiration, including documentaries, art books, American history and spiritual folklore were creative touchstones. All his work was painted on found objects, junk, that he scavenged from the Wynwood streets of Miami where he lived in a warehouse stacked with thousands of works. Purvis was about to lose his home and studio until art collectors Don and Mera Rubell (brother of Steve of Studio54 fame) saved the day with a dedication to preserve both his home and his artworks with a stipend to continue working. Since then, 493 paintings have been donated to museums across the country.
