Gignoux, Regis (French/American, Hudson River School, 1816-1882), Brooklyn, 1849, watercolor and white gouache on light blue paper, signed, titled and dated lower left, 9 x 14.75 inches, in a simple brown wood frame 12.75 x 18.75. Gignoux emigrated from France to New York in 1840 when he settled in Brooklyn and became the first president of the Brooklyn Art Academy. He was known for his winter and snow scenes, here highlighting the seasonal elements with white gouache against the blue paper. A striking and early artistic depiction of the borough.
