Laffranchi, Renato (Italian/Rivarolo Mantovano, b. 1923), Cat, 1967, mixed media on board, signed and dated at lower right. Gold leaf cat sitting at center. Laffranchi was born in 1923 in Rivarolo Mantovano (MN), completed his classical studies in Brescia, subsequently entering the city's Diocesan Seminary for the theological course and being ordained a priest in 1946. As a self-taught man he tackled the problems and issues of painting, staging his first solo exhibition in 1954 in the rooms of the Brescian Artists Association. He extensively practices panel painting, mosaic, fresco and stained glass. His artistic activity has its roots in the painting of the early twentieth century, with a particular focus on German expressionism and above all on the irreverent and polemical works of Grosz and Dix.
