Barnett, Rita Wolpe (American/Philadelphia, 1920-1991), Edge of Town, 1952, oil on canvas, signed lower left, 26 x 34 inches, in a period carved wood frame 33.5 x 41.5 inches. Provenance: Pearl Fox Gallery, Philadelphia, with two labels affixed to the back of the frame. A colorful scene showing a hillside working class African-American neighborhood adjacent to the railroad. Rita Wolpe Barnett was a Philadelphia artist and art instructor. As a child she studied at the Fleischer Memorial and later attended the Tyler School of Art. Her most influential teachers were Earl Horter, Louis Bouche and Leon Karp. She exhibited her paintings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery, the Woodmere Art Gallery, the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Museum. She also taught at the Philadelphia College of Art and the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.
