Twiggs, Russell (American/Pittsburgh, 1898-1991), The Ancient Word, 1956, ink, collage and wax on paper mounted to artist's board, signed and dated lower left, titled on a label affixed to the reverse, in a wood strip frame 34 x 25.5 inches. Twiggs was on the faculty at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University), Pittsburgh, PA, and a founding member of Group A, the collective of Pittsburgh abstract painters that also included Samuel Rosenberg, Balcomb Greene and Robert Lepper.
