Rosenberg, Samuel (Sam) (American/Pittsburgh, 1896-1972), Self Portrait with Pipe, 1921, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 26 x 19 inches, in a period carved gilt wood frame 32 x 25 inches. One of Rosenberg's earliest self-portraits, and one of very few of his paintings from before 1925 to appear at auction. In the 2003 monograph Samuel Rosenberg: Portrait of a Painter by Barbara Jones, the author discusses Rosenberg's early self-portraits on page 15. This one is described there as "a more mature, three-quarter-length Self Portrait, with pipe in his mouth, clean-shaven, and dressed in a suit, tie, and white shirt, an attire that would become his trademark." The painting is not pictured in the book, but it is included in the catalogue raisonne in the back. In generally good condition apart from overall mild, age appropriate crazing.
