Thangka of Shyama Dark Green Tara, Tibet, 18th or 19th century, gouache on cotton, 25 x 16.5 inches, in a cherry wood frame 31 x 24 inches, central figure of Green Tara in typical pose with flowing robes, Buddha Shakyamuni at top left, foreground with villagers pointing at a pair of stampeding elephants who represent physical danger but also a sense of permanent delusion, this piece would have been originally produced as the central work for a set of the Astamahabhaya, or "8-Great Salvations." Himalayan Art Resources number 90525.
