Sebree, Charles (African-American/Chicago, 1914-1985), Study for a Portrait, c. late 1930s, watercolor on paper, mounted to a backing board, inscribed on the verso in an unknown hand, 14 x 11.5 inches, unframed. Sebree was a part of the Chicago art scene in the 1930s before moving to New York. He worked for the Illinois Federal Art Project as part of the WPA and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Provenance: collection of Robert Hagenhofer, a graphic designer who attended the Chicago Institute of Design in the late 1940s following a stint as a soldier in World War II.
