Schwarz, Joseph Leopold (German/American/Pittsburgh, 1880-1964), Rialto Street, Pittsburgh, 1937, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, 24 x 20 inches, in the original green painted wood frame 27 x 22.75 inches. On the back of the frame Ravine St is written in faint pencil by an unknown hand. Ravine Street was the original name of Rialto Street (which is the 5th steepest street in the city, and is also known as Pig Hill). Not much information is available about the artist, but internet records show that he was born on April 30, 1880 in Burgheim, Germany to L. C. F. Leopold and Carolina Lenz. He immigrated to America in 1890. He married Margaret Elizabeth Auth before 1908 and lived at 22 Radnor St. in the city's North Side. He was Catholic, and is buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery.
