Woodwell, Joseph Ryan (American/Western PA, 1843-1911), Floral Still Life, 1866, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 18 x 14 inches, in a gilt wood frame 22.5 x 18.5 inches. Provenance: Joseph Horne Lindsay, Pittsburgh, then by family descent. Painted when he was only 22 or 23 years old, this is one of the earliest of Woodwell's pieces to show up at auction.
In fair condition, with two large areas of crude repair: one in the center has been patched but not inpainted, still has areas of paint loss; in the lower center another tear has been patched and inpainted. UV shows additional inpainting to the lower edge, but the signature does not fluoresce. Merchandise will be packed and transported by the purchaser at their own risk and expense.
