Piranesi, Giovanni Battista (Italian, 1720-1778), Veduta del Romano Campidoglio con Scalinata che va alla Chiesa d'Araceli [Capitoline Hill with the Steps to S. Maria in Aracoeli], mid to late 18th century, etching on laid paper, oval shaped watermark in the center right, impression 15.75 x 21.25 inches, full sheet 20.5 x 27.25 inches, unframed. A single plate from Vedute di Roma [Views of Rome], Piranesi's famous work, first printed in the late 1740s, showing Roman buildings, ruins and monuments, primarily marketed to European visitors on the Grand Tour. Provenance: from the collection of a retired librarian of art and architecture.

Condition

In good antique condition, soft vertical crease down the center, light staining in the margins; the sheet appears to have undergone a professional reduction of discoloration at some point.
