Ellis, Ray G. (American, 1921-2013), St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church, Troy Hill neighborhood, Pittsburgh, 1983, oil on canvas, signed lower left, 18 x 24 inches, in a gold painted frame 23 x 29 inches. St. Nicholas was established in 1894 as the first Croatian Catholic parish in the United States. The building was demolished in 2013. Ray Ellis was born in Philadelphia and attended the famed Philadelphia Museum School of Art. His first one-man show was held in 1947 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 2004, the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia honored the depth and breadth of Ellis' career with a major traveling exhibition titled Ray Ellis in Retrospect: A Painter's Journey.
